Sal Khattak

Lets meet Sal Khattak the “brains behind” a new service that could be the start of something very innovative. Mr. Khattak is the idea founder of HouseFaxReport.com.

HouseFaxReport.com (HFR) is a start-up based in Chantilly, VA that will offer the real estate industry something extremely useful, a very innovative product.

We discussed HFR with a very enthusiastic Mr. Khattak.

Tell me about your business?

House Fax Report LLC is a two year old company that consists of four individuals including myself. Our company was developed to provide consumers, agents, lenders, buyers and sellers with an extensive house property report. Just like Carfax provides a comprehensive history report of automobiles, we will do the same for homes.

How did you come up with the idea?

A couple of years ago when I went to purchase my home, I wanted to know important things like: demographics, crime ratings, schools, environmental concerns and a host of other information. To find the information I needed, I had to use numerous government and private sources. I had to get this info so that I could make a decision on a home that would be a good fit for me and my family. Not only was it time consuming but it was also expensive. I knew that there had to be a better way. I researched and noticed that there wasn’t, so I choose to develop it myself.

This sounds to very extensive to be able to compile this type of data into one report. What is your background that you feel comfortable taking on a project of this scale?

I have a background in IT, specifically networking. My wife, my best friend, his wife, and I all come from a strong IT background. We each have a different skill that encompasses years of development and programming experience.

The groundwork of the program was outsourced to a third party. We then developed the program from there.

We really believe in our product and believe there is a market and demand for a product of this type.

In addition, I believe “Failure is Not an Option”, so we will work hard for the success of HFS.

Do you currently work fulltime for another employer?

Prior to starting HouseFaxReport LLC I worked for a government contractor on the civilian side as an IT consultant. When I wanted to pursue HFR I no longer stayed employed with the government contractor and choice to become an independent IT consultant. Currently, I work as an IT consultant and with HFR.

How did you fund this project?

The project was funded with my life savings. We’ve invested over $500,000 into this venture. We’ve had offers from venture capitalists, but refused because we didn’t want to loose control of the company.

Why do you believe “House Fax Reports” are important?

House Fax Reports are important because they provide critical information that both buyers and sellers need to know. Without this information, buyers may not be aware of important history elements of the home they are purchasing. Important items to consider like environmental and crime concerns are very important.

What type of information will your reports provide?

A House Fax Report will provide property record information, demographics, school statistics, crime information and most importantly environmental risk issues.

Environmental risk issues, can you elaborate?

For instance, wouldn’t you want to know if the home you are buying was built on a land fill? Or maybe, a gas tanker had an accident and leaked fuel in the vicinity of your home, our report will provide that information so you can make a better decision.

The report appears to be very comprehensive?

Yes its is. We gather our information from public and private information. Our software will run a report and have it ready in printable format within 10 seconds.

Who are you going to target the product to?

Anyone can use our product, including real estate agents, buyers, sellers, banks, appraisers, home inspectors and insurance companies. We will offer several different report formats so that each report gives the information that will be useful to that individual or business.

What are your plans for the future?

We believe strong in HFR and I am excited about the project. Phase 2 of HFR will be to offer a guarantee on every report that we provide. We would also like to expand to Canada.

Our goal is to have the revenue to run an ad in January 2010 during the Super Bowl.

So what is your title?

I don’t have a title; I am a small business so I wear multiple hats.

If you had a bank account with $5 million, what would you do differently tomorrow?

Nothing. I am happy with the progress of our business and look forward to our launch date of August 2, 2010.
